Here is what I learned today:

One of the two things that I learned today was that two cities were destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius: Pompeii and Herculaneum. They were both completely covered by volcanic ash. The second thing I learned was that Pompeii was buried for about 1,700 years and archaeologist began to uncover it in 1748.

A navigational strategy is using the titles of the articles in bold on the websites that help you gather information.

awesomestories.com was a reliable source because it had a copyright, but it is also important to look up information in other websites to make sure that the information is similar.

The informational feature I liked about the websites I visited was that most of them had pictures and maps that would make finding information more interesting for students.

Lesson Idea

Internet Workshop: Exploring Pompeii

Objectives:

During our Internet Workshop you will be gathering more information about Pompeii, the city that was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted on August 24, 74 A.D.. Vacation Under the Volcano has provided us with several facts about the city and its incident, but by looking through a some websites you will be able to expand on your knowledge. The following activities will help you have a better understanding for what occurred during this time.

1. Explore the following website and pretend you were living during the time of the eruption in Pompeii and were one of the eyewitnesses. http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/pompeii.htm
This website will give you an idea of what people were thinking and doing before and during the incident. You will need to write a letter explaining similar facts and how the people around you were feeling. Decide who you would write to, why, and what you would include in your letter.

2. Use the same website to help you illustrate with pictures what you think the city looked like before and during the eruption. Explain in detail what you see and what the environment is like at the time, using at least one fact from the website. You will share this activity with a partner during the internet workshop and inform them about your findings.

1. Use the following website http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/pompeii/history/history-03.html to read and look at some of the important facts that are found on the pages in it. Write down three new facts that stand out to you and that you would like to share with your classmates. What strategies did you use to choose these facts? Did you find the pictures helpful? How would you return to this site if a classmate wanted to visit it? Make sure you share the strategies you used to find your information with them.

2. The above website will help you come up with a timeline. The timeline should include events that occurred during the day of the eruption that lasted 19 hours, start with 1:00pm and end with 8:00am. Write about what you think people were during these final hours. Using the map on this website, talk about the closets city people could have fled to if they had the time.
